Restore a workspace

Bring back a deleted workspace, or restore an archive into a new one.

Last updated 2026-10-19

Harthelm gives you two ways back: a deleted workspace stays restorable for 7 days, and the archives of a sleeping workspace restore into a new workspace.

Bring back a deleted workspace

Deleting a workspace stops it at once and takes its URL offline, but keeps it under Recently deleted for 7 days. Its files are erased after that.

  1. On Workspaces, open the tab Recently deleted. Each row says how many days it has left.
  2. Click Restore on its row.

The workspace comes back as it was and starts like a new one: Sync and Run its landscape again. If another workspace of the team took its name meanwhile, rename that one first.

A deleted workspace's disk still counts against the team's storage quota. Purge now deletes it for good, after you type its name; it cannot be restored afterwards.

Restore an archive

While a workspace sleeps, an installation with workspace backups takes an archive of its volume: /data/app and the tools mise and Nix installed. How many are kept is your installation's setting; by default the last 7 days and 4 weeks.

Find the archive

Open Workspace settings on the rail. Backups shows the last archive and the list of archives. If the workspace has changed since, put it to sleep and click Archive now; the new archive appears when it is done.

Restore it into a new workspace

Click Restore into new workspace on an archive, name the new workspace, and click Restore. The original is not changed.

The new workspace starts asleep and wakes once its volume is filled. Its plan, base image, availability and visibility are those of the archived workspace, and its origin repository is on its Git access list.

Set it up again

Environment variables, secrets and the landscape are not part of an archive. In the new workspace, set the env vars, then Sync: the review asks for the secrets.

Workspaces that never sleep are never archived

Archives are taken only while a workspace sleeps. A workspace that is always running has none; switch it to Sleeps when idle or put it to sleep to get one.

If Backups says "Workspace backups are switched off on this installation", ask your administrator.

What is not in a workspace archive

  • Managed databases: they have nightly dumps of their own; see Managed services.
  • Env vars, secrets and the landscape, as above.
  • The home directory, which is emptied on every start anyway.
